Spanish Children's Book

  • Who: Spanish V & Technology Explorations students
  • How: Wrote a storyline including illustrations, shared ideas with Technology Exploration class who drew the illustrations in PhotoShop along with the text, proofread draft copy and edited it collaboratively, and then uploaded all completed files to MixBooks for printing. The final book was printed for the children who attend the inhouse Kiddie Korner program in the FCS Department. The Spanish V students presented a lesson to these children about Spanish culture and then presented the books to them as a gift.
  • Why: Students learned creative writing, publishing skills, how to work with a bilingual challenge, and learned how to present to younger children.

7 Elements of Project-Based Learning

1. Driving Question: How do young children learn to appreciate second languages?

2. Need to Know: Students ask questions and get answers from their Spanish and technology teachers as the project progresses.

3. Inquiry and Innovation: Students are creating a product to address a need for bilingual exploration and recognition.

4. Student Voice and Choice: Students decide the story line, illustrations, and publishing choices.

5. Feedback and Revision: Students rely on their teachers, peers and group members throughout the project for advise on edits needed, illustration changes and best publishing options.

6. 21st Century Skills: Communication, cooperation, organization, and coordinating are essential skills to complete the project.

7. Outside Audience: The finished book is read to a group of preschoolers who are getting their first introduction to other languages.
